SAR le prince Henri d'Orléans, Comte de Paris, Duc de France

14 June 1933 - 21 January 2019

The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem joins with others who knew, collaborated with or were related to the late Count of Paris in praying for the repose of his noble soul after a long and eventful life in the service of his country and his family.

As Head of the Royal House of France and in accordance with the tradition of his ancestors, the kings of France from 1154 until 1830, Prince Henri accepted the title of Temporal Protector of the Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem as an integral part of his own heritage. In Orléans Cathedral on 12 September 2004 he publicly declared his perpetuation of this commitment, guaranteeing both in terms of the law and of tradition, the authentic and unique character of this ancient institution.

During its centuries of exile from the Holy Land, while its magistral seat was at Boigny in France, the Order respectfully carried out its mission under the Crown of France. With the re-establishment of its magistral seat in Jerusalem, where it was founded and legitimized through service of the Church, by mutual agreement with the Count of Paris the temporal protection of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem was formally set aside so that knights might once more ‘seek first the Kingdom of God’, who there wore a crown of thorns.

Recalling that Prince Henri left this world on the same day as his ancestor King Louis XVI in 1793, we pray that he may be granted the eternal reward of his Christian life of service.

Adieu, Monseigneur!
Et cum Lazaro quondam paupere aeternam habeas requiem
