† HSH Princess Tatiana von Metternich-Winneburg GCLJ

The Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem records with regret the loss of one of its most widely respected members, ID Tatiana Fürstin von Metternich-Winneburg, Grand Bailiff of Germany, who died on 26 July 2006 at the age of 91.

Princess Tatiana was born in 1915 in St Petersburg as the daughter of Prince Wassiltschikow. Her family fled Russia at the time of the Revolution and after spells in Malta and France she grew up in Germany. After studying painting in Munich, her linguistic skills led to a job at the Foreign Office in Berlin in the late 1930s. Here she met the man who was to become her husband, Prince Paul Alfons von Metternich-Winneburg, great grandson of Prince Metternich, the Austrian leader at the 1815 Congress of Vienna. Marrying during the Second World War they lived in Bohemia, later returning to settle amid the vineyards of Johannisberg in the Rheingau region of Germany, where they rebuilt the family Schloss in which they lived happily together with an adopted son until Prince Paul’s death in 1992.

The life of the Princess was marked by both a love of the arts – she co-founded the renowned Rheingauer Music Festival and took much pleasure in painting and writing – and by a strong social conscience. She worked tirelessly to help the poor of Eastern Europe in particular, and her efforts were recognised with numerous honours.

Having joined the Order of Saint Lazarus in 1978, Princess Tatiana succeeded her late husband as Grand Bailiff of Germany. Her zeal and commitment produced outstanding results in the OSLJ’s international, charitable and ecumenical activities and led the Grand Master to bestow on her the exceptional award of the Order’s Grand Collar.

Sadly, major health problems in the last few years of her life made her housebound and seriously curtailed her active leadership of the Order in Germany, though her example continues to inspire. Now at last her sufferings are relieved and her noble soul may return to God.

Et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem.
